Rep Greg Markkanen
Rep. Markkanen to serve as vice chair for two House committees in 2021-22 legislative term
RELEASE|January 21, 2021

Lead positions part of four total assignments for U.P. legislator

In his second term in the Michigan House, state Rep. Greg Markkanen today was appointed by Michigan House Speaker Jason Wentworth to serve on four House committees.

Markkanen, of Hancock, will serve as vice chair for the House Energy Committee and the House Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Committee. He was also named to the House Education and House Workforce, Trades and Talent Committee.

“I thank Speaker Wentworth for these important assignments,” Markkanen said. “They ensure Northern Michigan will be represented on committees that are debating policy issues that will impact their lives, jobs and families. That’s crucial.”

The House Energy Committee deliberates on all issues related to Michigan’s energy situation. This includes the generation of energy transmission throughout the grid and delivery to end users such as schools, businesses and residences.

The House Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Committee receives policy issues related to the use and management of Michigan’s natural resources and environmental stewardship. This includes, but is not limited to, forest management, dredging, wetlands, hunting and fishing, trails, recycling, hazardous waste, air quality and water.

Markkanen served on both the House Energy and House Education Committees during the previous legislative term, along with three other committees. He brings significant experience to the House Education Committee as a former high school teacher for Baraga Area Schools. Markkanen also has graduate work in special education with a focus on learning disabilities in grades K-12.

“What I appreciate when these committees are discussed and formed is the background from every legislator that is taken into account,” Markkanen said. “When you put together panels that have previous experience in these areas, it delivers a more tailored approach to policy decisions – and that’s giving the people a good product within their state government.”
